Local History: The Union Mills Study

As more communities search for ways to preserve their unique flavor, some are requiring developers to take a role in documenting local history before the bulldozers arrive. In 1989, Milestones was invited by local government authorities in Fairfax County (VA) to join two other historians in conducting a formal historical study of a tract of land slated for private development. Funded in part by the subdivision's developer, the "Union Mills" report traces two centuries' worth of farming, milling and mining near Bull Run, scene of some of the Civil War's best- known military action. Research took Milestones into nineteenth-century County deed books, local newspapers, court papers and personal correspondence.
