On January 1, 1997, Benchmark founder Thomas H. Grape launched a tiny assisted living company at a time when earlier entrants to the field were pulling up stakes. Convinced that the young industry held tremendous promise, Grape and his small band of associates held on through tough times to emerge as New England’s largest assisted living provider, with 43 communities under its flag. Behind much of Benchmark’s success is a strong and vibrant corporate culture dedicated to putting people first. In 2008, Grape hired Milestones to document its 10-year history.
