BOOK: PRINCIPLES THAT ENDURE: 125 Years of Northern Trust, 1889–2014
In 2014, Northern Trust marked its 125th anniversary by commissioning an official history of the bank and its founder Byron Laflin Smith. Smith opened Northern Trust on August 12, 1889 in a small office in Chicago’s famous Rookery building. A respected financier and businessman, Smith immediately attracted big-name clients, including Marshall Field, Philip Armour and Hetty Green, who wanted to place their Gilded Age fortunes in the hands of someone they could trust. Principles That Endure tells the story of Northern Trust’s birth in the aftermath of Chicago’s Great Fire and its steady evolution into a global bank that today manages $1 trillion in assets and holds $10 trillion in custody.
